Who said that?

We've all heard of famous people who have been quoted. And as time goes on, their names become synonymous with those quotes. For example: "Ask not what your country can do for you. But ask what you can do for your country." Of course, those famous words were spoken by John F. Kennedy. There are many, many others as well.

Although not as famous, us common folk have also come up with some sayings of our own. We usually have a funny or sarcastic saying for which we are known. I've met several people over the years who use the english language quite eloquently...to say the least! I'll bet you know a few people like that too. Here's some of the more memorable sayings from people I've had the pleasure to know!

"It's hotter than a two dollar pistol shooting uphill!" I worked with an electrician who used to say this all the time on very hot days. He said that a two dollar pistol was made so poorly, it had a hard time pushing bullets out the end of the barrel without overheating. And if you pointed the gun up at an angle, it would really get hot!

"A man riding by on horseback couldn't tell the difference!" That same electrician used this expression too. He usually uttered this phrase after looking at a job that was done in a less than esthetically pleasing manner. In other words; although the job wasn't perfect, it was acceptable by his standards!

"No, but I know his brother!" A guy I recently worked with used this one several times a day or as often as the need arose. Quite often when we are about to tell someone something we'll start off by saying. "You know what?" And then of course the other person replies, "What?" Then we proceed to finish the rest of our story. Well, this guy I worked with would always interrupt you immediately after you said, "You know what?" by saying, "No, but I know his brother."It wasn't all that funny but it could make you lose your train of thought for a few seconds! So, the next time someone starts off a conversation with you by saying, "You know what?" You reply, "No, but I know his brother!" See what kind of reaction you get. More than likely they'll say, "What?", while looking a bit bewildered!

Also, this reply works as well. "No, but if you'll hum a few bars, I might remember..." (contributed by DynaGal03, Texas)

"Strip it and back it off a thread!" Years ago I worked with this guy who was retired from the Air Force and he liked to use this expression while we worked on something together. If the job we were doing required us to tighten something, (nuts, bolts, etc.), and I was exerting too much force on the item, he'd sarcastically state, "Why don't you just strip it and back it off a thread?" Of course, what he really meant to say was, "Stop tightening it already! It's tight enough!"

Do you know anyone who is worthy of being quoted on this page? If so, please email me with your memorable quote and I'll post it here! Buzz
